If you’re taking steps to become smokefree, you’re probably enjoying the positive changes it has made to your life. Maybe your friends and family want to support you but aren’t sure how they can help. Here are a few ideas you can share with them.
Ask for their understanding
Ask them to be sensitive to your feelings and explain to them why you want to quit. If you think it will help you to feel supported, ask them to check in with you from time to time.
Talk about your cravings and triggers
Tell them if there are things they can do to help you, like avoiding smoking around you if they are smokers, or not offering you cigarettes/nicotine products.
Ask for their advice
Ask them to talk about smoking and be honest about their own quit attempt if they are ex-smokers, sharing any advice if you’d like to hear it, and sharing any tools or support they found useful.
Involve them in your quit journey
Share the details of your quit plan, like start dates, any NRTs you plan to use, and any plans you’ve made of ways to keep you on track, like starting a new hobby or exercising more. Share your successes with them so they can help you celebrate!
With your own dedication and motivation, our support, and their understanding, you can quit smoking for good.
