1/1
Why quitting matters
Smoking during pregnancy is one of the biggest preventable risks to a baby's health.
It increases the risk of serious complications, including premature birth, low birth weight and stillbirth. It can also affect a baby's health after birth, including increasing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Every step towards being smokefree helps improve outcomes for both baby and parent.
Everyone has a role to play
Creating a smokefree pregnancy and home isn't just about Mum. It's about the people around them too.
If you're pregnant or you have a new baby, support is available to help you stop smoking.
If you live with someone who is pregnant, or who has a new baby, your encouragement and actions can make a real difference.
If you're a midwife, health visitor or other healthcare professional, you play a role in offering advice, support and early intervention.
Together, we can help give every baby the healthiest possible start.
You're not alone
Stopping smoking can feel difficult, especially during pregnancy or early motherhood, but we're here to help you every step of the way.

It's never too late to stop smoking
Quitting smoking improves the oxygen supply to the baby and reduces the risk of complications. The earlier you stop, the better. But stopping at any stage of pregnancy, or after your baby is born, will still have immediate and lasting benefits.

Your questions answered
It's completely normal to have questions about smoking during pregnancy and after your baby is born. We're here to help, not judge.
Is it really worth stopping smoking if someone is already pregnant?
Yes, absolutely. It's never too late to stop smoking, and stopping at any stage will benefit both mother and baby.
Is cutting down enough?
No. There is no safe level of smoking in pregnancy. Stopping completely offers the greatest protection.
Does secondhand smoke matter?
Yes. Being around people who smoke, or living in the same home as someone who smokes is harmful for both parent and baby, during pregnancy and after birth.
What support is available?
We offer free, friendly support to help you quit smoking for good, including behavioural support and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products to help manage cravings while you quit.
If you're pregnant, the Maternity team can also give you a voucher for a free vape under the 'Swap to Stop' scheme.
Our support is for anyone that smokes, so if someone who lives with you smokes, we can help them to quit, too.
